Breastfeeding support group awarded grant from Caerphilly Town Council

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 11:00, Friday January 27th, 2012.

Caerphilly’s new breastfeeding support group ‘Full Circle’ has received a grant of £150 from Caerphilly Town Council.

Jessica Starr, one of the mothers who set up the group said: “We are so pleased that the town council have awarded us this funding. We know we are providing an important service to local mums and their families. With this money we will be able to continue to rent our hall space and will be buying some new equipment for the children.”

Full Circle was started by four local mothers who had all experienced some problems breastfeeding their own babies. They wanted other mothers to have a more positive experience and set up “Full Circle” to provide this support. The group is run on a voluntary basis and are in the process of applying to become a charity.

Breastfeeding rates in Caerphilly are the second lowest in Wales, with just 8.5% or babies being breastfed at six months of age. This is in contrast with the government recommendation that all babies are exclusively breastfed for the first six months. Studies show many mothers want to breastfeed but are unable to because they don’t have access to good support and information. Full Circle provides this crucial support in a friendly and relaxed environment.

Full Circle Breastfeeding Support Group is held at the Twyn Community Centre every Tuesday from 1pm until 3pm.

It is free to attend and refreshments are provided. For more information visit www.fullcirclebsg.co.uk
