Coleg Gwent students’ sporting successes

Sport | Richard Gurner | Published: 20:08, Wednesday November 3rd, 2010.

Students at Coleg Gwent’s Crosskeys Campus have demonstrated they are more than a match for the competition after enjoying a trio of recent sporting successes in hockey, netball and swimming.

Crosskeys Campus ladies hockey team started their season with a 6 – 0 win over St David’s College, Cardiff, with Danielle Naylor scoring a hat-trick.

Talented students Laura Adams and Isabel Marsh have also been selected to play for South East Wales under 18 Hockey Team and also for the Welsh Colleges Women’s Hockey team. The two girls will play in Nottingham in November representing the Welsh Colleges team against the North East, North West and East Midlands regions.

Crosskeys Campus netball team have had a fantastic start to the season with eight students making the grade to represent South East Wales in the Welsh Championships – Chloe Turton, Emily Larson, Bethany Pearce, Alys Little, Sophie Williams, Anna Marsh, Megan Edmunds and Katie Burridge. Three of the students have also been selected for the Welsh Colleges Netball team.

At the Welsh Colleges swimming Championships in Swansea, Coleg Gwent students enjoyed further success. Kieron Woods won the 50m breaststroke, Matthew Gummer took first place in the 50m butterfly, Rory Pardoe (Usk Campus) won the 100m Backstroke and Jake Plumley achieved third place in the 100m butterfly. The boys also teamed up to win the 200m medley relay in spectacular style.

Sports Lecturer Mererid Dark said: “We wish all of our sports students the very best of luck in their forthcoming competitions and congratulate them on the tremendous success they have achieved so far.”
