Police continue to investigate Rhymney arson attacks

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 15:41, Wednesday February 1st, 2012.

Police are continuing their enquiries into two arson attacks that happened in Rhymney on Sunday.

The first fire broke out in the early hours at a flat on Heol Aneurin Bevan in Rhymney. It happened at approximately 4.30am.

A man and a woman escaped the burning flat by jumping from the first floor window. Both are still in hospital after suffering from smoke inhalation and serious back injuries but are not in a life-threatening condition.

The second fire happened at a house on Goshen Street. It extinguished itself but caused damage to the front door of the house. Officers are carrying out enquiries to find out when it started. There was one man in the house at the time but he was not injured.

Both fires are being treated as arson and officers are keeping an open mind as to whether they are linked or not at this stage as they continue their enquiries to establish the full circumstances.

Police are keen to trace a person seen in the area at the time of the first fire.

The person was seen at Eisteddfod Fields, Tan y Llan Terrace, Rhymney, at approximately 4.20am. They are described as white, approximately 5ft 8in tall, of a stocky build and with glasses.

They were wearing a navy blue hooded top that had two white stripes on the sleeve and grey coloured sweatpants.

Anyone with information should contact Gwent Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
