Coleg Gwent students impress at Hairdressers and Therapists Competition

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 16:14, Friday February 17th, 2012.

Coleg Gwent students recently impressed the judges at the semi-finals of the 2012 Association of Hairdressers and Therapists UK Trainee Competition.

Between them the students scooped two gold medals, a silver and three bronze.

Coleg Gwent students battled it out against competitors from across Wales and the South West in the different categories of the regional heats for a place in the national AHT final.

For the hair competition, categories included Ladies Evening Style, Men’s Commercial Cut and Finish and Ladies Long Hair. The beauty categories included nail art, face and body painting and 1940s makeup.

Competitors from the college’s Crosskeys and Newport campuses had plenty to celebrate as they secured national final places.

“We are thrilled with the results and very proud of the students’ exceptional hard work,” said Crosskeys campus hair and beauty lecturer Rachel Meehan.

Maxine Harrison, hair and beauty lecturer at Newport, added: “All the students competing did a fantastic job against a high standard of entries and are now hoping to continue their success at the AHT national final in March.”

The winners from this regional round received medals and certificates along with a place in the National Finals in Blackpool, where they will be representing Wales and the West in March 2012.
