Jocelyn Davies AM invites First Minister to Twmbarlwm

The historic monument of Twmbarlwm is under threat, say conservationists

Plaid Cymru AM Jocelyn Davies has invited the First Minister for a trip up the historic monument of Twmbarlwm.

The South Wales East AM wants Carwyn Jones to see the work being undertaken by the Twmbarlwm Society, a conservation group.

During First Minister’s Question Time at the Senedd earlier this week, Ms Davies said: “First Minister, on a number of occasions, I have written to Ministers to urge them to do what they can to put an end to the destruction of Twmbarlwm tump by mindless illegal motorcyclists. Will you agree to come to the monument via the wonderful Cwmcarn forest drive to see it for yourself and meet representatives of the Twmbarlwm Society, which is dedicated to the protection of the monument?”

Responding, the First Minister said he would be happy to visit in ‘the fullness of time.’

Ms Davies has worked with Twmbarlwm Society to support their efforts in maintaining the monument as a local focal point for the enjoyment of local residents and visitors.

Speaking from the National Assembly, she said: “Twmbarlwm Society have been working tirelessly to maintain the wonderful monument. They are working hard to combat illegal motorcycle use and littering and I want to pay tribute to them for that. I extended the invitation to the First Minister in the hope that he will come and see for himself the work being undertaken and to highlight to him the challenges of illegal motorcycling on areas of natural beauty.”

On Wednesday this week, the Cymdeithas Twmbarlwm Society called a public meeting on the future of the monument.

The society has said that erosion and illegal off-roading present a threat to the monument. Planned maintenance works and a new car park nearby are also a worry to it.

This public meeting sought to address the issue of protecting and conserving the landscape heritage on Twmbarlwm and Mynydd Maen.

Rob Southall, the society’s founder and current secretary said that “Our landscape and history are under threat. We must address this issue now as it may be our last chance to protect a national treasure before it is lost forever.”
