Malky Mackay with his Malky MacPie - try saying that with a mouthful

First it was rugby’s Jamie Roberts in pastry, now Bedwas food firm Peter’s has turned its attention to Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay in its latest PR stunt with a pie named in his honour.

The “Malky MacPie” features prime Scottish beef and the Bluebirds logo on its crust. The company has baked the pie in honour of Cardiff’s Wembley appearance this Sunday in the League Cup final.

Some 3,000 city fans will also be handed free Peter’s pies and sausage rolls as they set off on coaches on Sunday.

Peter’s managing director Mike Grimwood, said: “Malky has already done great things for the club and the city so we’re happy to help develop his legend

“We already have powerful links to City thanks to our pastry products being enjoyed at their stadium; the Malky MacPie further strengthens our relationship.”

Only a small number of the hand-made cup final pies were created; and hand delivered to high-profile figures around Cardiff.

The 550 workers at Peter’s production plant at Bedwas produce around 3.1million pastry products every week.

Mr Grimwood said: “They always rise to a challenge and it was no different on this occasion – there’s a lot of goodwill here towards Malky and the squad.

“We wish them all the best on their big day and hope they bring the cup back to Wales.”

Ahead of the Six Nations 2012 tournament, Peter’s created a mosaic of Wales rugby player Jamie Roberts out of pastry.

Meanwhile, First Minister Carwyn Jones has wished the team luck.

He said: “I wish Cardiff City all the best for this weekend. This is the first time a Welsh club has reached the league cup final and it shows just how strong Welsh football is at the moment.”
