Pupils from Lewis Girls’ School and Lewis School Pengam have been recognised for not skipping a day of school in the last five years.

Hannah Jones from Lewis Girls School and Rhys Davies, Michael Shaughnessy and Quemrick Amor, all from Lewis School Pengam, were presented with their awards by Education Minister Leighton Andrews during a lunchtime reception in Cardiff Bay last week.

The ceremony and awards were organised by Phil Morgan from Careers Wales Mid Glamorgan and Powys EBP to commend 33 students from 13 schools.

Pupils were also treated to a speech by former Welsh Rugby international player Rhys Williams who now works for GE Aviation, the company which sponsors the awards.

Caerphilly AM Jeff Cuthbert AM said: “I attend the awards every year because school attendance is so incredibly important; particularly in the current economic climate.

“It looks terrific on the CVs of young people and gives them an edge on others because it shows their commitment. Employers will look at it and think if they did it at school, than they can and will turn up to work if offered a job.

“To not miss any school at all is not just a feat of their immune systems; it’s a great start to their adult lives. I would again like to congratulate all the students, particularly the four from my Caerphilly constituency and wish them all the best for the future.”
