Secretary of State for Wales Cheryl Gillan has praised those involved for bringing defence firm General Dynamics to Oakdale, as the company celebrates ten years in the area.

Mrs Gillan made the comment following a question in the House of Commons from Islwyn MP Chris Evans.

During Welsh Questions, Mr Evans asked the Welsh Secretary whether she would join him in congratulating the previous Labour Government, who were instrumental in bringing General Dynamics to the area.

In response, Mrs Gillan said: “I have great pleasure in congratulating any individuals who were involved in bring General Dynamics to Wales. I have visited General Dynamics on many occasions and it is an excellent company. I am pleased to concur with the hon. Gentleman’s sentiment.’

Mr Evans said: “It is fantastic to hear Mrs Gillan praising the excellent work of the former Labour Government.

“General Dynamics is an example of a thriving company here in Islwyn and I am delighted the Secretary of State recognises the crucial role the previous Labour Government had in creating jobs and bringing businesses to Islwyn.

“Even the Tory Secretary of State acknowledges that Labour had the right policies for Wales.”

In July 2011, the company announced it was investing £12 million at its site in Oakdale.
