Chickenshed theatre workshop inspires St Martin’s School drama students

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 13:00, Monday March 5th, 2012.

GCSE Drama students from St Martin’s School, Caerphilly, have been performing their work in front of a paying audience.

On February 23 and 24, a dozen Year 10 students collaborated with theatre company Chickenshed to help create a “curtain raiser” for the professional production of Crime of the Century – which revolves around the subject of gang culture.

The performance took place in the Blackwood Miners Institute which provided the opportunity to perform in a professional venue to a public audience.

The project was funded by the Arts Council of Wales and was free for pupils to take part in.

Over the course of the two days, students were introduced to innovative and contemporary theatre.

Involved in rapping, singing, dance and physical theatre, students experienced an opportunity to learn about themselves, gang culture and the theatre.

Emily Jones, a student from St Martin’s School, said: “It was an unforgettable experience.”

Staff and pupils at St Martin’s School would like to express their thanks and gratitude to all at Chickenshed and the Arts Council of Wales for making this an affordable and accessible workshop.
