School children release 200 balloons in Aberbargoed

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 12:00, Tuesday March 6th, 2012.

School children at Ysgol Bro Sannan released almost 200 balloons

Almost 200 balloons were released last week by school children as part of their St David’s Day celebrations.

Pupils at Ysgol Bro Sannan, in Aberbargoed, released the balloons as part of their Eisteddfod and as a way of showing their suport for the upcoming Olympics and Paralympic Games.

Attached to each balloon was a laminated card asking whoever found it to contact the school. The children are planning to log the finds and create a map. The balloons that reach the furthest will win house points and a prize for the child who released it.

The children were joined by Ryan Spencer-Jones, a Commonwealth Games Shot Putter for Welsh Athletics.

Ysgol Bro Sannan will soon be taking part in a number of sporting activities such as Sport Relief, Literary Olympics Week, School Swimming and National School Sports Week (NSSW).

Councillor Phil Bevan, cabinet member for education, lifelong learning and leisure said: “It is important we do all we can to inspire our young people into sport, the legacy of the Olympics will be that our children all feel able to enjoy sport, but also have more awareness of the world and its people.”
