Primary schools awarded sporting equipment thanks to pupils’ creativity

Two Caerphilly County Borough primary schools have been awarded £100 worth of sporting equipment, thanks to the creativity of their pupils.

Emma Davies, 11, from Glyn Gaer Primary in Gelligaer and Lyra Davies, nine, from Rhiw Syr Dafydd Primary in Oakdale were announced as the winners of Caerphilly County Borough Council’s competition to find a new design for its SmartCard – which residents use at libraries and leisure centres

The council is launching a new initiative called the Children’s University which uses SmartCard technology to reward youngsters for taking part in activities such as swimming lessons or visiting the local library, outside of school time. The winning designs will be printed on all Children’s University SmartCards across the borough.

One thousand five hundred students across Caerphilly County Borough entered the competition. The council said there were some wonderfully imaginative designs for the judging panel to choose from.

Cllr Phil Bevan, cabinet member for education, lifelong learning and leisure said: “The standard of entries in the competition was excellent – I’m proud to see so many of our children and young people entered the competition, and would like to congratulate the winners for their incredibly imaginative designs.”

As well has having their design printed onto the SmartCards and getting up £100 worth of sporting equipment for their school, each pupil also walked away with an array of fabulous prizes. They each won a leisure lifestyle family membership for a year, an iPod shuffle, a £10 book token, a £20 Superstore gift card and an A4 framed picture of their design.

The competition was split into two categories, with one of the winning designs decorating the SmartCard for pupils aged four to 13 and the other to go on the card for pupils aged 14 to 19.
