Event to showcase Maesycwmmer road improvements

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 14:00, Friday March 16th, 2012.

Residents in Maesycwmmer can find out about plans to improve traffic congestion in the village at a special information event taking place on Thursday March 22.

Caerphilly County Borough Council is trying to secure funding from the Welsh Government for a new improvement scheme at the A472 signal control junction in Maesycwmmer.

Once funding is confirmed, work should start in late summer 2012 and continue for about eight months. The specific dates and times will be confirmed over the next few months.

The junction at the traffic lights has been a congestion bottleneck, especially at morning and afternoon peak times.

The council has said the A472 is a key strategic route and with around 23,000 vehicles passing through the village every day.

The completion of the nearby Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr hospital development and national annual traffic growth, together with future proposed developments means that vehicle numbers are forecast to rise significantly in the future. It is expected that this number will rise to 28,000 vehicle per day by 2025.

Terry Shaw, head of engineering at the council said: “Already we see significant congestion at peak times, which will only worsen with the increase in vehicles. The proposed works will not only improve traffic flow through the village, but also improve the pedestrian crossings, bus stops and safer parking.”

  • The special public information day will take place on Thursday March 22 when residents can go along and find out more about the highway improvements. The event will take place between 11am and 7pm at the Maesycwmmer OAP Hall located off the Crescent, Maesycwmmer , CF82 7QF.
