Police urge residents in Blackwood area to secure homes after burglaries

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 12:00, Friday March 16th, 2012.

Police in the Blackwood area are reminding residents to secure their homes following a recent spate of burglaries.

In the last six weeks, 14 properties in Blackwood have been targeted in areas including Pontllanfraith, Oakdale and Cefn Fforest.

Entry has been gained through removing the rear windows of the property as well as residents leaving windows and doors open during the better weather.

In the majority of burglaries items stolen include laptops, cash and credit cards, jewellery, electrical items and a car after the vehicle keys were stolen from inside a property.

Inspector Mark Smith, from the Blackwood Neighbourhood policing team, said: “I would urge home owners to think more carefully about security when going to bed or leaving their property, even if it’s just for a short time.

“Far too many domestic burglaries are occurring where occupants have left windows open or doors unlocked. The recent increase in offences could escalate as the warmer spring and summer weather approaches. My message is simple – Do you want your home burgled?

“If not, help the police by making that extra check which could prevent you from losing cash, bank cards, televisions, computers, jewellery, car keys and car.”
