Netball event raises awareness of cervical cancer and sexual health

Sport | Richard Gurner | Published: 14:00, Friday April 6th, 2012.

Young women from across Caerphilly County Borough have taken part in a Netball tournament to raise awareness about cervical cancer and sexual health.

Six teams attended a recent tournament at St Cenydd Leisure Centre, with Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni claiming a hard-fought victory. When not competing, the year 9 girls attended health workshops raising awareness of screening, vaccination and keeping safe.

David Phenis, the council’s community development manager, said: “For several years we have seen the success of our Big Tackle Rugby Tournament, it is fantastic to see this success now replicated for young women in Caerphilly.”

The event organised by Sport Caerphilly, was part funded by Health Challenge Caerphilly and hosted by Welsh Netball and Healthy Schools, the theme of the event ‘Screen and Shield’ was chosen to make young women aware of the importance of protection and screening against cervical cancer.
