Former Welsh footballer from Senghenydd launches book

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 10:42, Friday November 16th, 2012.

Former Welsh footballer and goalkeeping coach Martin Thomas, will be signing copies of his new book ‘From the Valley, to the Valley and Back’ at Senghenydd Community Centre on Friday November 16 2012, from 10am to 12pm.

Born in Senghenydd, Martin Thomas has made over 500 appearances in the Football League as a goalkeeper for teams including Bristol Rovers, Newcastle United and Birmingham City and has also represented Wales at senior international level.

‘From the Valley, to the Valley and Back’ offers a fascinating insight into his 36 years of professional football, from getting his break at Bristol Rovers in the 1970s, helping Newcastle United gain promotion to the top-flight in the 1980s, to his days as a successful goalkeeping coach.

Following his retirement as a player he delved into the world of coaching, working for various clubs, alongside Ray Clemence and the English Football Association. Thomas was part of the England Under-21 coaching staff that guided the team to the semi-finals of the 2007 UEFA Under-21 Championships, and also the Team Great Britain coaching staff at this year’s Olympic Games.

All proceeds from the book sales will be used to support the Aber Valley Heritage Group with their 2013 project. For further information please contact the Aber Valley Heritage Group by email senghen.heritage@btconnect.com
