Islwyn MP Chris Evans: “Legal aid cuts will have a huge impact”

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 11:00, Monday May 30th, 2011.

Islwyn MP Chris Evans has warned that cuts to the legal aid budget could see areas like Islwyn becoming ‘advice deserts.’

Mr Evans, who is a member of the Justice Select Committee, said planned cuts to the legal aid budget could lead to a lack of legal aid provision in Islwyn hitting vulnerable groups disproportionately.

He said: “I am deeply worried by proposals to cut legal aid. The amount of letters sent to me by constituents on this topic show that I am not the only one concerned.

“It is very worrying that areas like Islwyn could be left with no legal aid representation at all. This denial of justice for our most vulnerable will mean people will have no choice but to fight legal battles on their own without proper representation.”

The Government’s proposals require all legal aid practices to bid for new legal aid contracts.
