A worker made redundant in the aftermath of the Crumlin Real Crisp factory fire has set-up his own gardening business.

Andrew Stark, 52, was a production team leader at the factory before it was burned down in September last year in an arson attack. He had worked there for seven years.

He decided to follow his passion for gardening and the outdoors and started Blackwood Tree and Garden Services with the help from Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Business Enterprise Support Team.

Cllr Ken James, cabinet member for regeneration, said: “We are delighted to be able to help Andrew to start his own business and help him to climb the first rungs on his way to success.

“The team have a range of grant schemes for both existing and start-up businesses, and I would urge anyone thinking about starting a business to contact the team and see what help they can get.”

Mr Stark, who lives in Blackwood with his wife and 16-year-old daughter, said: “I am very grateful for the help that I have received from the council’s team to get my business off the ground. The funding secured from Caerphilly County Borough Council has helped me to purchase a range of equipment, including climbing ropes.”
