Simon Weston and Joe Calzaghe take to the track to help raise almost £100,000 for the NSPCC

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 11:00, Monday March 11th, 2013.

British Army veteran Simon Weston, from Nelson, and Newbridge boxer Joe Calzaghe took to the race track to help raise almost £100,000 for charity the NSPCC.

The pair were taking part in an event called The Circuit.

The race event, which took place at the PalmerSport Bedford Autodrome, featured six teams led by celebrity captains who battled it out on the track, all in aid of the NSPCC. Competition was fierce, with teams racing each other to take the chequered flag and the title of champions of The Circuit 2013.

Guests experienced an adrenaline-fuelled day of racing, putting pedal to the metal on purpose-built tracks behind the wheel of top-of-the-range cars including a Caterham 7 Superlight, Ariel Atom, BMW M3 GTP and a single seat Formula Jaguar.

Simon Weston OBE, said: “It’s been a real privilege to be involved in The Circuit and was a thrill to get behind the wheel of these high performance cars, all for a good cause. I had a fantastic day and am delighted that we’ve been able to raise almost £100,000 for the NSPCC – a charity I’m proud to support.”

Former WBO Super Middleweight Champion, Joe Calzaghe, said: “I love fast cars and so was delighted to be involved in The Circuit, having the chance to get behind the wheel of some top-of-the-range cars to help raise money for a good cause. The NSPCC is a charity I’m proud to support and so I’m thrilled that we’ve been able to raise almost £100,000 to help protect vulnerable children and young people.”

All funds raised from the event will help the NSPCC to protect vulnerable children through its projects and services including ChildLine – the UK’s free, confidential 24-hour helpline and online service for children and young people.
