405 fines handed out by Caerphilly Council for dog fouling and littering

A total of 405 fixed penalty fines have been issued by Caerphilly County Borough Council so far this year for littering and dog fouling offences.

Since April 2012, Enforcement Officers from Caerphilly County Borough Council have handed out a total of 334 fixed penalty notices for littering offences and 71 for dog fouling.

Cllr David Poole, cabinet member for community and leisure services, said: “We listen to our residents complaints and take them very seriously. The amount of fixed penalty notices issued proves our commitment to keeping our county borough clean and beautiful for the enjoyment of all who live and visit here.

“As a council we take a firm, zero tolerance approach towards irresponsible people who litter or fail to pick up after their dog. I would encourage people to take their environmental responsibilities seriously, and also encourage residents to report the small minority of people who commit these offences.”

Good public relations exercise by the Labour Council, that`s 405 people and their families, and probably a few hundred friends who will think this over the top, subjective, enforcement of these selected targeted individuals is a good idea??? Whilst failing to target areas outside pubs and high street supermarkets and high street betting shops, particularly in Caerphilly town Centre.

These civilian street wardens with no particular authority should be doing what they were originally intended to do, that is act as support to communities up and down the borough, talking to residents and reassuring them that they are about when residents may not be.

Currently these staff are acting like some sort of civic `Police force` they even parade about in robbo cop type uniforms trying to assume responsibility they do not have.

The sooner the money spent on these people is diverted back into services for the people of the borough, and let law enforcement officers get on with the job of enforcing the law the better. For the record, I have never been on the receiving end of one of these ` civic fines` so my comments are not based on sour grapes but on a balance of good civic relationships with the people of the borough, and not one which creates confrontation.

keep it up, educating these offenders has failed so hit them in the pocket. Its disgusting and anti-social and a health hazard to people and residents using public open spaces and parks. I was behind a car this week and the driver threw a cigarette but out of the window. Guess what, I am reporting it and the driver will hopefully have a surprise in the post.

I agree with Simon, really how hard is it not to litter. Carry your rubbish with you to the nearest bin or take it home. Most pet owners are responsible and happy to clean up after their dog. The minority that wont are selfish and deserving of no sympathy.

I live in Oakdale and the amount of people I see in the morning and evening walking their dog and not picking up the mess is appalling!. They walk the dogs in the local parks and playing fields. It is a disgrace the amount of dog s*** on the pavements, so many times I have gone home after taking my baby out for a walk in the pram and came home to the wheels being full of it! Please come to my area and issue fines! maybe it will hit them where it hurts!
