A 67-year-old man from the Cardiff area has been killed in a car crash on the M4 at the Brynglas tunnels in Newport.

A section of the M4 eastbound was closed after the crash at 3am but has since re-opened following the recovery of the vehicle and a structural assessment of the tunnel.

In a statement, Gwent Police said: “Emergency Services were called to attend a collision on the Eastbound M4 at the entrance of the Brynglas Tunnels at approximately 3.06am today, Friday March 15.

“The collision involved one vehicle, a Peugeot 308 saloon, which collided with a wall and also an electrical sub-station.

“The driver, a 67-year-old man from the Cardiff area, was recovered from the vehicle but was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Following the collision the eastbound M4 remained closed from Junction 26, with diversions in place to allow for vehicle recovery and a structural assessment of the sub-station and the tunnel. The work has now been completed and the Eastbound M4 has reopened but congestion remains very heavy in the area.

“CCTV shows a number of motorists stopping at the side of the vehicle immediately after the collision, officers are particularly interested in speaking to these people. They include heavy goods vehicle drivers, and one man who actually got out of the passenger side of a passing vehicle and walked over to have a look inside.

“Anyone who may have witnessed the collision is asked to contact Gwent Police by dialling 101.”

During the closure there were five mile tailbacks stretching as far as Junction 30 Cardiff Gate with the closure affecting Junction 28 Tredegar Park and J25A A4042 / B4596 Grove Park Roundabout.
