More than 120 youngsters took part in this year’s Disability Six Nations Rugby day
The annual event was back for its ninth year at Trinity Fields School offering youngsters the opportunity to experience the thrills of rugby, develop new skills and make new friends.
Fifteen schools from across South East Wales attended this year’s event with a Tri-nations tournament alongside the traditional Six Nations competition.
Following Wales’ triumphant Six Nations glory, Welsh player Ryan Jones attended to show his long-standing support and present the youngsters with medals.
Cllr David Poole, cabinet member for community and leisure services, said: “This annual event has grown in popularity each year and it’s wonderful to once again see so many children coming together and taking part. No matter what the child’s ability, everyone could get involved giving them a sense of enjoyment and competition in a safe and positive environment.”
The growing success and popularity of this event is testament to the work of Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Disability Sports Development Officer
Paul Taylor, Caerphilly Council’s disability sports development officer, said: “Despite challenging weather conditions, all schools had a fantastic time at the event and the rain certainly didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the children and volunteers. Everyone involved showed a great deal of kindness, patience and professionalism on the day to ensure a very rewarding experience for the children.”
Welsh Rugby Union community development officers and students from Crosskeys College supported the day, running a variety of skills sessions including bag tackling, kicking at goal, passing and much more. The sensory experiences of the activities are a great benefit for young people with disabilities.
Local company Orange Box sponsored the event and provided equipment for the day, training for staff and kit for each of the competing teams.
