Coleg Gwent students got first-hand experience of European economics in action on a visit to the European Parliament in Brussels in preparation for A Level exams.

A group of ten A Level Economics students from Coleg Gwent’s Crosskeys Campus spent three days learning about the economics of the European Union in preparation for their exams this summer.

Coleg Gwent economics lecturer Ian Whitehead-Ross said: “The trip was invaluable in supporting the students’ understanding of the challenges the Eurozone is facing, such as rising government debt, austerity, the pressures on the single currency, and how these issues affect the UK economy.”

Sponsored by Kay Swinburne, Conservative representative for Wales in the European Parliament, students visited the Parlamentarium, the European Parliament’s Visitors’ Centre.

The group also got the opportunity to speak to Wales’ MEP Derek Vaughan to develop their understanding of the different institutions in the European Union, the impact of EU enlargement, and the challenges facing the Eurozone.
