A triumphant team of pupils from Heolddu Comprehensive School were recently honoured for their efforts in this year’s Young Consumer of the Year competition.
Catherine Broom, Ryan Bailey, Lewis Evans and Lewys Pugh were presented with certificates from the Mayor of Caerphilly County Borough Council, Cllr Gaynor Oliver, at the council’s Penallta House headquarters last week.
The team paved their way to the Welsh finals at the Pavillion Theatre, Llandrindod Wells, having emerged victorious in the Caerphilly county borough leg of the competition. Following an exemplary performance throughout, the team narrowly missed out on a spot in the grand final, with the competition eventually being won by a team representing Bridgend county borough.
Cllr David Poole, Cabinet Member for Community and Leisure Services said, “Congratulations to the pupils of Heolddu Comprehensive, who have done a fantastic job of representing our borough at the Welsh finals. They have exemplified excellent consumer knowledge and thoroughly deserve this recognition for their efforts.”
The Young Consumer of the Year competition is organised locally by Caerphilly Trading Standards Service and the Trading Standards Institute. It is a unique competition for schools and youth groups in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.
Teams are tested on a wide range of issues including consumer law, safety and the environment, credit and the European dimension, whilst making students aware of their consumer responsibilities and rights.
