Open access weekend for new state-of-the-art pitch at New Tredegar

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 15:00, Friday May 10th, 2013.

Residents have been invited to an open weekend to inspect new indoor 3G training pitch at New Tredegar Leisure Centre.

The artificial surface, which has been approved by the International Rugby Board, is the first indoor pitch of its kind in Caerphilly County Borough and will support local schools, sports clubs and the local community.

Suitable for both full contact rugby and football, the state-of-the-art surface will provide a practice and training facility for both sports, particularly during the cold winter months.

On Saturday May 11, football enthusiasts can try the new surface in the main hall for free, with open access between 10am and 1pm for youngsters aged between four and 12.

Ages 13 and over can try the pitch out between 1pm and 4pm. People with a passion for rugby can come along at the same times on the Sunday to try out the pitch.

Cllr Dave Poole, Cabinet Member for Community and Leisure Services, said: “I would encourage anyone who enjoys playing rugby or football to come along to the open weekend and give this fantastic new facility a run for its money.

“As the first indoor 3G surface of its kind in the county borough, residents from across Caerphilly are welcome to come along and give this stat-of-the-art training surface a try. I am sure that in the future this facility will become indispensable to local schools, sports clubs and the local community so this is a great opportunity for everyone to get in early and try it out for free.”

The Minister for Culture and Sport will officially open the new indoor 3G surface on Monday May 13.
