Welsh Water moves to stop water cut Twitter rumours

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 07:33, Thursday June 2nd, 2011.

Welsh Water, which is head quartered in Nelson, was besieged with angry customers last night after rumours the water supply would be switched off swamped social media websites such as Twitter and Facebook.

Customers said they had been told that planned work on the Pontsticill water treatment works near Merthyr would result in their water supply being switched off and that they were advised to fill containers with water.

The work started at 8pm Wednesday ad is due to finish at 12 noon Thursday.

Welsh Water has said that customers in the Rhondda Cynon Taf, Rhymney and Caerphilly areas should see no difference in their supplies.

A Welsh Water spokesman told the BBC: “Initially we sent a letter, and when misinformation started appearing on social media sites we issued the correct information on Twitter etc.”

He also added that the Welsh Water call centre had been inundated with calls. The Welsh Water Twitter feed was also very busy last night.

The latest information on the works can be found on the Welsh Water website.

If Welsh Water did not want to a rumour to spread that supplies were to be cut off in Caerffili why did they send a letter to everyone in the town that this would happen?

Somebody in this company has made a big mistake, the Courthouse pub and the Muni were just two businesses that closed because they believed the water supply would be off from 20-00Hrs to 12-00 Hrs today. Some hefty compensation claims are in the offing, I think.
