The chance to win an Amazon ebook reader is being used as an incentive to get residents signed up to an online neighbourhood watch scheme.
People from Caerphilly County Borough who sign up to the Online Watch Link (OWL) from June 1 to August 1 will automatically be entered into a prize draw to win a Kindle Fire HD 7 inch tablet.
The tablet has been donated by the Blackwood and District, Bedwas and Caerphilly, Bargoed and Rhymney Crime Prevention Panels.
OWL lets residents share local crime information easily online. Last month, Caerphilly County Borough had 1,000 new members added to OWL.
Sergeant Paul James, from Gwent Police, said: “OWL is a neighbourhood watch system that works for the 21st Century.
“With the increased use of the internet in people’s homes, this is a great tool to help raise awareness of crimes and help residents prevent themselves from becoming a victim of crime.
“The system works well because residents are quickly informed on local policing matters in the comfort of their own homes. We can send out messages not only at ward level but down to street level – this a good news to Neighbourhood Policing Teams if we want to warn residents of an issue that may affect them.
“Over 9% of Caerphilly homes are now signed up to OWL – a figure that is growing every day.”
Last month Gwent Police and Crime Commissioner Ian Johnston committed to funding OWL in Gwent for a further 12 months.
