A council-backed campaign to encourage communities to volunteer and litter pick has cleared almost 50 tonnes of rubbish.

Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Big Spring Clean ran throughout March, April and May and saw armies of volunteers join together with council staff to spruce things up.

In addition to the litter picking, council workers also resurfaced roads, cleared drains, and painted street furniture.

During the last week of the campaign, pupils from Lewis School Pengam planted flowers and shrubs in high profile locations, while children at Glyngaer Primary School, Gelligaer, took part in a litter pick around their community.
Councillors also got involved, with local members Cllr Roy Saralis and Cllr Jean Summers digging in at Woodfieldside near Blackwood.

They helped the Tidy Towns Team improve the look and feel of the area for local residents, visitors and passers by.
Meanwhile Cllr Dave Poole, Cabinet Member for Community and Leisure Services, and Cllr Tom Williams, Cabinet Member for Highways, Transportation and Engineering joined the Lewis School Pengam pupils during their morning of planting.
Cllr Poole thanked everyone who has been involved during the campaign and encouraged residents to continue looking after their environment throughout the year.

“I would like to thank all those residents, school children and community groups who have graciously volunteered their time and effort in helping the council make Caerphilly County Borough an even more beautiful place to live, work and visit.

“The last week is yet another example of everyone pulling together during our Big Spring Clean campaign, going that extra mile to make our urban environment more attractive, through clearance work, painting and planting schemes.
“Although the Big Spring Clean is a three month campaign, I assure residents that the council will continue to work hard throughout the year and I would encourage all residents to continue to play their part in keeping our county borough looking greener and cleaner.”

    Great work guys!

Unfortunately many people in Caerphilly don't care and will carry on littering. Shall we guess how long it will take before all of the litter is back?

    I'll start. I'll guess at 6 months.

  • A new health board initiative is changing the way menopause care is delivered in GP surgeries across Gwent. The Menopause Champions Project, introduced in June this year by Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, aims to give patients going through menopause better access to informed and consistent support from their local practice teams. The scheme was developed by Dr Jayne Forrester-Paton, a menopause and sexual and reproductive health specialist, alongside Dr Michelle Olver, clinical lead of the menopause team, and nurse consultant Nikki Noble. Together, they set out to equip GPs and practice nurses with up-to-date knowledge and practical tools to improve care. So far, 41 GP practices in the region now have a trained “Menopause Champion” — a clinician who can provide advice and guidance on both hormonal and non-hormonal treatment options. These champions are backed by a network of colleagues and specialists to help them stay confident in managing more complex cases. Dr Forrester-Paton said the project had already made a strong start and would continue to grow: “We are proud of how successful this project has been so far and will continue to grow, with plans to expand educational sessions for clinicians, offer virtual case discussions to improve care for complex menopause cases and strengthen the collaboration between primary care and specialist menopause services. “The Menopause Champions Project is helping to ensure that menopause is treated with the same care and attention as any other health issue, giving patients the support they need, when they need it.”
