On your bike: Travel hub opens in Caerphilly town centre

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 13:30, Tuesday June 18th, 2013.

A new Travel Hub, offering a wide range of activities including cycle training, bike maintenance classes, lead walks and rides, and travel advice, is opening in Caerphilly.

Located in the Visit Caerphilly Centre, the Travel Hub will promote the use of walking, cycling and public transport for everyday journeys – designed to cut congestion in town.

The Travel Hub forms part of a Welsh Government project aimed at increasing the use of sustainable transport. With support from Caerphilly County Borough Council, the Travel Hub will be operated by charity Sustrans.

Edwina Hart AM, Minister for Economy, Science and Transport, said: “The Travel Hub is another element of Welsh Government’s strategy to promote sustainable transport. The project has already delivered a significant behaviour change in Cardiff, and this new hub is an excellent way for Caerphilly residents and visitors alike, to find out more about how to make their regular journeys without the need for a car.”

Cllr Tom Williams, Caerphilly County Borough Council’s cabinet member for Highways, Transportation and Engineering, said: “Through sustained investment by the council and other partners, Caerphilly county borough has a great network of walking and cycling routes. The Travel Hub is an excellent way to raise awareness of these routes, and give people the confidence to try them for the first time.”

Georgina Harper, acting director at Sustrans Cymru, said: “We know that the lack of information on alternatives to car travel is one of the major barriers to people changing their travel behaviour. The Hub will give people the chance to learn more about the options that exist, and help to cut congestion in the town.”

Hi I am interested in learning to ride a bike and need to get out a bit more. Could you tell me where I could get information to learn to ride.

    Hi Shirley,

We offer free cycle training to people of all levels and could certainly help you build up your skills and confidence with some training.

I will be in the Hub at the Visit Caerphilly Centre from Wednesday to Friday and my colleague will be there on Saturday if you can drop in to book some training. Or you can e-mail me on

I look forward to hearing from you!
