Get ready for the Caerphilly 10km race

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 10:19, Friday June 21st, 2013.

Thousands of people are expected to line the streets of Caerphilly this Sunday for the town’s first 10km race.

Organiser Caerphilly County Borough Council has said more than 1,600 runners are expected to cross the start line at 10am.

The good news is the weather for the morning is looking good – which is probably be a relief to Peter’s Pies mascot Pete the Pie, who will be running in aid of the Noah’s Ark Appeal.

Peter’s marketing controller Clare Morgan has been getting up early each morning with the new mascot to make sure he’s fit to race.

She said: “This will be Pete the Pie’s official début so we wanted to make it a good one. He has been training really hard, up at the dawn every morning so we know he’s up to the challenge. Running in aid of such a worthy charity is sure to spur him on too. Other runners at this weekend’s event will have to pick up the pace ear to beat Pete the Pie.”

To help him and other runners on the day, a team of 27 volunteer ‘race makers’ will be on hand to advise people.

The volunteers have all been selected from schools across Caerphilly County Borough. The Year 12 pupils were put through their paces at an assessment day earlier this month taking part in team building exercises, delivering an activity and attending a one-to-one interview.

They were judged on various aspects of leadership including teamwork, communication, confidence and creativity. The pupils have now officially joined Sport Caerphilly, the council’s sports department, on its Coaches of the Future programme.

Road Closures
There are a number of road closures in and around Caerphilly town centre on Sunday June 23 to allow for the safe running of the race.

Residents and visitors to Caerphilly on the day are advised that a number of roads will feature either full or part closures from 7am until 1pm.

The start/finish line is located on Crescent Road which will be fully closed from 7am until 1pm.

The town centre itself and the road leading from the Crossways roundabout to Van Road will be fully closed between 9.45am and 12pm while Piccadilly Road will be fully closed from 9.45am to 10.45am.

The road between the Cedar Tree roundabout and Bedwas Bridge roundabout will be closed to eastbound traffic only from 9am until 11.30am.

  • Look out for our special double page spread of photographs from the race in our next print edition out on Thursday June 27.
  • Don’t forget to send us your pictures from the day also – we’d love to feature them in print and online.
