Online crime could cost the Welsh economy billions, an MP has warned.
Speaking during Cabinet Office questions in the House of Commons, Labour’s Islwyn MP Evans called on the UK Government to help improve people’s computer literacy so that online shoppers do not become victims of internet fraud.
In 2010, cybercrime cost the Welsh economy £974 million and there are fears this figure could reach billions with the average person now spending over £1,000 online each year.
Mr Evans said: “With more of our personal information online than ever before, the government need to ensure that people are aware of the dangers of scams and hacking online.
“Some 16 million people still lack basic online skills and are most at risk from internet fraud. Unless the Government acts now, I am concerned that online crime could cost the Welsh economy billions in years to come.”
