Hundreds of people turned out to show their support for the armed forces last week as a parade and flag raising ceremony was held to mark Armed Forces Day.
A short parade, led by the Royal British Legion, was followed by a flag raising ceremony at Caerphilly County Borough Council’s headquarters at Ty Penallta in Ystrad Mynach. Staff also held a ‘dress down day’ in aid of the Royal British Legion which raised more than £ 300.
The Mayor of Caerphilly County Borough Council, Cllr Michael Gray said: “Armed Forces Day provided a fitting opportunity to get together and raise awareness of the contribution made to our country by those who serve or have served in the armed forces, and show our support for all they do. I was delighted to see so many people join us to honour the men and women who make up our armed forces community.”
Cllr Gray also took the opportunity to announce the news that the Royal Welsh had formally accepted Caerphilly County Borough Council’s invitation to exercise their right to parade through the county borough, with a parade through Bargoed town centre scheduled for Saturday September 28 at midday.
This follows the regiment receiving the freedom of Caerphilly County Borough in September 2010.
Following the formal Armed Forces Day proceedings, guests were also invited to witness the signing of the Caerphilly County Borough Armed Forces Community Covenant – a voluntary agreement showing support for the armed forces.
Labour AM Jeff Cuthbert said: “Armed Forces Day is an important opportunity to say thank you to our service men and women.
“Our armed forces make a great sacrifice to defend the UK and the brave work they do should always be recognised. The nation owes all our servicemen and women a debt of gratitude and I’m proud to support Armed Forces Day.”
Islwyn AM Gwyn Price added: “Armed forces Day is a special event and we should relish the opportunity to raise awareness of all that our forces do for us.
“I always look forward to this event and would like to thank all those at Caerphilly Council for organising it.”
