Caerphilly students have volunteered to provide free hairdressing to patients at Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr hospital.
The Hair and Beauty students, from The College Ystrad Mynach, have given up their time to put their newly learnt skills into practice, while helping those in need.
Providing the free service has also helped students to develop their practical experience in a working environment, and improvetheir communication skills, when working with customers.
The service has been well received by patients, and Jodie Hill, a 25-year-old student volunteering at the hospital, is undoubtedly proud of her achievement.
She said: “It is so uplifting to know that we make the difference to so many people’s lives. Patients are noticeably cheered up when we visit, and it is clear that they value our service.
“We provide companionship, as well as hairdressing, and it is fantastic to see so many smiles across the wards when we visit.”
Martine Lewis, level three hairdressing course lecturer at The College Ystrad Mynach, said: “This scheme allows students to boost their practical skills and expertise, while providing a service to patients, who cannot access such amenities.
“I’m incredibly proud of every student that takes part, as they are giving something back to the community and help a great amount of people in need along the way.”
Bryn Davies, Principal of The College, who recently announced his retirement, said: “This generous act will not only help patients but will also help to build the students’ own credentials and give them valuable practical experience to help them in their future careers.”
