Free business training from Chwarae Teg available for women

Business, News | Richard Gurner | Published: 13:00, Friday August 30th, 2013.

A team leader at Nantgarw-based GE Aviation Wales is urging other local women to take advantage of free business training.

Natalie Moore, 26, is one of over 30 women at GE Aviation Wales who has benefitted from enrolling on the Ascent programme, run by women’s economic development body for Wales, Chwarae Teg.

The ‘Ascent’ programme, which has already provided recognised management training and tailored one-to-one support to over 2,000 Welsh women, helps to boost confidence and develop new management skills.

Natalie is urging local women who wish to climb the career ladder to register for the final round of courses starting in September.

She has worked for GE for four years including one year in her current role as a Sourcing Leader, which involves leading a team of three people who manage the repaired material stream for the GE90 engine, the highest volume product on site.

Natalie said: “I heard about the Ascent course via GE Women’s Network and jumped at the chance of gaining extra qualifications.

“Since going on the course I have been able to get my first team leader role, and I believe the course helped me towards this because it gave me strong time and team management techniques. I am more confident now, and the job safety gained from having a clear career path has enabled me to purchase a house.

“Katie Cole from Chwarae Teg was very helpful both during the course and after in highlighting potential further courses which may be of interest. I’d recommend Ascent to other women because it helps develop skills that can benefit you when applying for promotion.”

Ascent, which involves no fee for the participating women or their employer, is part of Chwarae Teg’s £12.5m European Social Fund and Welsh Government-funded Agile Nation project that supports the progression of women in the workplace.

Ascent enables female employees working in the private or third sectors to develop their team-leading and management skills and gain an accredited Institute of Leadership and Management qualification within eight weeks.

The final Ascent course being run by Agile Nation in Caerphilly County Borough begins on 14 September in Aberbargoed.

Hayley Dunne, Agile Nation Project Manager, said: “When we set up Agile Nation our aim was to have a real impact on real lives, and the achievements of the 2,000 women who have been through the Institute of Leadership and Management course is this aim realised. I would like to congratulate all the women who put themselves forward for the training and thank the managers of Welsh businesses for identifying individuals whom they believed had great potential.”

To register for the final Ascent courses by September 6 or for more information call 01443 824410, email agilenationsew@chwaraeteg.com or visit www.agilenation.co.uk/for-women/

An excellent programme giving unique and exciting opportunities for females to improve their careers. The lucky people taking the course will have access to hi-tech, efficient equipment to hep them best complete their tasks. The course leaders have, combined, over 150 years experience and have held high position jobs at GE and other leading companies in the same/ similar fields.
