Football: Nelson Cavaliers 0 Abercynon 3

Sport | Richard Gurner | Published: 09:29, Monday September 30th, 2013.

Nelson were looking to have an extended run in South Wales Intermediate Cup competition on Saturday September 21, but this came to an abrupt end when they were comprehensively beaten by their higher league opponents and local rivals Abercynon.

Despite the optimism by the fans and coaching staff, Nelson Cavaliers failed to raise their game to the next level. Abercynon took control from the start with their work rate which Nelson failed to match and soon found themselves under tremendous pressure.

Nelson kept the score level until midway through the first half when a good strike saw Abercynon take the lead. Nelson tried to respond but were then caught with the sucker punch and were soon two goals behind. Half time arrived with Nelson two down.

Nelson changed their style in the second half to try and gain parity but soon found themselves three down when they conceded a penalty. Despite Matthew Farr’s magnificent save the Abercynon striker was quicker to the rebound and slotted home.

No matter how hard Nelson tried they could not reduce the deficit and Abercynon ran out comfortable, easy winners. We wish them all the best in the next round of the cup.

Match report by David Roberts of Nelson Cavaliers.
