Expansion for Islwyn Community Credit Union

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 15:00, Wednesday October 2nd, 2013.

A credit union has expanded by opening a new collection point.

Islwyn Community Credit Union will host a weekly collection point at Cwmcarn Institute and is appealing for volunteers and members to join it.

MP Chris Evans, local Councillor Ken James, his wife, Mary, Blackwood Councillor Nigel Dix, former Assembly Member Irene James and Lord Don Touhig are all members and recently attended an official launch of the collection point.

Mr Evans, who recently led a backbench debate on high cost credit and is Treasurer of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Credit Unions, said: “It is up to all of us to promote the work of the credit unions to stop people falling into the hands of predatory loan sharks.

“These payday loan companies have massive advertising budgets and can reach millions of vulnerable people with just advert on daytime television.

“That is why it is so important that all of us tell our friends and family about the excellent services on offer at Islwyn Community Credit Union. It was great to stand alongside Don, Irene and local Councillors who are all massive supporters of the credit union movement.

“I hope everybody in Islwyn will join us in opening an account. I am so pleased to see Islwyn Community Credit Union expand in this way.”

The collection point will be open every Tuesday from 10am until noon. To find out more call the credit union on 01495 222832 or visit www.islwyncu.co.uk.
