A hat-trick from left wing Aaron Davies helped Caerphilly complete their first victory of the season at Virginia Park on Sunday October 13, defeating Cilfynydd 25 – 7.

It took just eight minutes for the home side to take the lead, a short range penalty by centre Will Worthington their reward for dominating the first quarter of an hour.

Davies crossed the line for the first of his hat-trick, with the home side again on the attack.

Breaking from deep inside their own 22, fullback James Kestell cut through the visitors and up to the halfway line. Drawing the final line of defence, Kestell released winger Davies to cross in the corner.

Minutes later and the home side extended their lead. Another break from the 22, this time courtesy of Worthington took play deep into the Cilfynydd 22.

Supported by outside-half Vaughan Thomas, play was taken close to the five metre line. Recycling through the backs, Davies again found himself in space to score on the left again.

Caerphilly had to settle for a 13-0 lead at the midway point. A crazy four minutes then saw the home side extend their lead as Davies grabbed his hat-trick, crossing for a converted try on 46 minutes.

Collecting the restart, centre and coach James Rowles broke through the centre to release right wing Michael Lynch, returning from injury, to score a simple try, unopposed, giving the home side a 25-0 advantage.

This was to be Caerphilly’s final score of the day, as the visitors stepped up their game, and the home side spent the next 30 minutes defending their lines.

Cilfynydd were eventually rewarded with a converted try from Mike Oliver, Mark Burton converting, but were unable to break down a dogged defence from the home side to cross any further.

Caerphilly travel to Talywain next weekend looking for another win.
