Four local heroes have been honoured for their work in the community.

Each year Aber Valley Community Council holds its Community Recognition Awards to recognise people from Senghenydd and Abertridwr for their work.

Here is a list of winners with the reasons why they were recognised by the community.

Pat Evans, of Abertridwr: Pat has worked at the Aber Valley YMCA for over 50 years and has contributed greatly to the success of the YMCA in the Aber Valley.

Carol Bowen, of Senghenydd: Carol has contributed a great deal to the Aber Valley, she is a founder member of Senghenydd and Abertridwr Linking Together, the Chairperson of Senghenydd Community Centre, Treasurer of the Aber Valley Partnership Group and is also working very hard as a member of the heritage group.

Christian Farrell, of Abertridwr: Christian has attended the Aber Valley YMCA Karate group for over seven years.  He has been recognised regularly within the group at the YMCA, winning student of the year twice.

Christian has steadily moved through the disciplines of Karate to the point where he is now preparing to take the Black Belt Grading.

Jessica Manship, of Senghenydd: Jessica has contributed greatly to SYDIC and the community of the Aber Valley over the years in workshops and meetings including PACT, Local Community Forums and action groups.

Jessica has developed as a person and as a leader within SYDIC and recently she has been elected by the SYDIC Youth Committee to sit as Youth Director of the SYDIC Management Committee.

Cllr Betty Prendergast, Chair of Aber Valley Community Council, Councillor Betty Prendergast, said: “It is very gratifying to acknowledge members of both villages who give a great deal of their time and commitment to our community.”
