20mph limit to remain in Machen

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 11:00, Friday November 1st, 2013.

A 20mph speed limit introduced outside a school is to remain in place after a successful pilot.

A temporary 20mph speed limit was introduced on the A468 Commercial Road in Machen in August 2011 after locals raised concerns about speeding.

Since it was introduced, according to Caerphilly County Borough Council, the speed limit has helped slow motorists down.
Traffic surveys show that Average traffic speeds have been reduced by over 5mph at the beginning and end of the school day.

During a meeting of Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Regeneration and Environment Scrutiny Committee on Tuesday October 29, Committee Members agreed to keep the 20mph speed limit in place.

The council’s speed management strategy is currently being revised, so that schemes similar speed limits outside schools can be introduced elsewhere.

Cllr Tom Williams, Cabinet Member for Highways, Transportation and Engineering, said: “It is pleasing to see that this pilot advisory part time 20mph scheme in Machen has worked so effectively in reducing motorists’ speed and increasing safety in the village.”
