A local schoolgirl has won a £250 donation for her school, after winning a festive design competition run by the Tesco store in Ystrad Mynach.

The store, on New Road, invited local schools to design a bag highlighting why they loved Christmas.

The winning design by Ellie Paget, aged eight, from Glyn-Gaer Primary School, in Hengoed, will now appear on limited edition re-usable hessian bags which were given away in store.

Deputy store manager Chris Halsey invited Ellie and some of her classmates in to the Tesco store to reveal her bag for the first time before they became available for customers.

Chris, said: “We received over 400 fantastic entries from seven local primary schools which made it really difficult for my team and I to pick a winner but Ellie’s design stood out. Her design really captured the family spirit of Christmas.”

Julie Jones, acting headteacher at Glyn-Gaer Primary School, said: “Ellie is a delightful member of our school and she is always keen to participate in creative activities and competitions. We’re all very proud of her for winning the competition.

“We’d like to thank Tesco for their donation which will be used to help fund a new printer for our iPad stations.”
