RUGBY UNION: A dominant performance from the Cross Keys pack paved the way for a deserved victory over a lacklustre Bedwas and a place in Round Three of the Swalec Cup.
Keys scored their first try in the February 15 match, after only five
minutes.
Captain and Number 8 Adam Powell crossing and Dorian Jones adding the extras.
Richard Powell put Bedwas on the board with a well-struck penalty but that
was as good as it got for the home side.
The visiting eight upped the pressure and forced the home pack backwards in the tight before visiting scrum half Rhys Dyer scored from a driving maul.
Jones missed the conversion but added a penalty a minute later to put his side into a comfortable lead.
Five minutes later a neat Dorian Jones cross field kick was gathered by full back Rhys Jones for an unconverted try in the corner.
Play was held up following an injury to Bedwas scrum-half Tom Edwards, but it didn’t deter the Keys’ effort and with time running out, James Cordy-Redden was on the end of a fine move for their fourth try.
Two Dorian Jones penalties after 48 and 54 minutes effectively sealed Keys’ passage to the next round of the cup.
Bedwas made a raft of changes and gave Keys a taste of their own medicine as they finally managed to assert some pressure on the visiting pack, who saw Ollie Hodge sin binned for persistent ruck offences, but Bedwas were unable to turn the man advantage into points.
The game developed into a slugfest in the mud but nobody could deny that Keys deserved the victory.
