Ynysddu Welfare book place in fifth round of the County Motors Cup

Sport | Gareth Hill | Published: 14:00, Friday February 21st, 2014.

FOOTBALL: Ynysddu Welfare beat Blaenavon Blues 2-0 in the fourth round of the County Motors Cup, held on February 15.

After an impressive victory against Division One side PILCS in the Gwent Amateur Cup, the Welfare beat another division side on Abertillery’s 3G pitch.

Blaenavon started the game the better of the two sides, with Ynysddu defending in numbers to stay level.

Despite their dominance, Blaenavon failed to create opportunities, with the Welfare creating a few chances of their own.

Blaenavon tried using the wind, playing long balls to test the Welfare backline, but they held strong, marshalled superbly by man of the match David Palmer.

With 30 minutes on the clock, a long free-kick from Tony Davies was headed back across goal by Ben Murphy and after a goalmouth scramble, Jack Pewtner hammered the ball into the bottom corner for the Welfare’s opener.

Blaenavon almost found the equaliser before half-time when a superb volley from 20 yards whistled past the post.

Blaenavon dominated the second-half but the Welfare backline held on with a superb goal line block from Gareth Berry before an off-the-ball incident saw a Blaenavon player sent off ten minutes from time.

With a minute left on the clock Blaenavon had a corner and up came the keeper, but the cross was cleared again by Palmer.

His header found Aaron Pewtner who played the ball into Ben Murphy. With the keeper trying to get back to goal he struck the ball into the empty net with the last kick of the match.
