Boxing legend Enzo Calzaghe has opened a memorabilia shop in Newbridge to share the history of Team Calzaghe with his home town.

The 65-year-old trained his 46-time undefeated world champion son Joe Calzaghe in the town. His gym also boasts a host of graduates including Cefn Fforest’s former world champion Nathan Cleverly and Newbridge lightweight Gavin Rees.

Calzaghe Casa – which means Calzaghe Home – opened on March 29 with Enzo signing copies of his book, A Fighting Life, and selling items including, boxing gloves, t-shirts and promotional posters.

Calzaghe is not currently training and said that boxers treat trainers like “maggots”, but did not rule out returning to the gym with the right boxer.

He said: “The most important person in boxing is the trainer – not the boxer. There is no respect from boxers for us.”

He said the shop will allow him an ordinary life after training and added: “I wanted to show our success to the public. The shop’s in Newbridge because it’s the home of Team Calzaghe. We were created in the town and it will allow people to see the past, present and future of Newbridge.”
