Caerphilly RFC won a bonus point victory, beating bottom of the table Rhymney 38-7 at Virginia Park on Saturday April 12.

The home side scored six tries, climbing two places to fifth in League Three East.

Caerphilly took the lead after five minutes, spreading the play out wide from right to left with wing Michael Lynch on hand to cross the line.

Three minutes later the home side were again on the score sheet as hooker Alex Field dived under the posts for a try converted by outside-half Vaughn Thomas.

Caerphilly forced the pace – knowing nothing short of a bonus point victory would help their cause for a minimum sixth place finish.

Wild passes and dropped catches halted their progression and were responsible for the only Rhymney try of the game on 28 minutes. Winger Jack Donnegan intercepted a long pass in midfield to run the length of the field for a converted try.

Caerphilly extended their lead after a strong run from centre Chris Thomas made space and the ball was released to centre Will Worthington to burst through to score out wide on the left.

Caerphilly scored the bonus point try in the final play of the first-half.

They won a five-metre scrum against the head and the drive crossed the line for number eight Gareth England to ground the ball. Thomas added the conversion, securing a 22-7 half-time lead.

The crowd had to wait until the 80th minute for another score. Worthington finishing off a move started by wing Oliver Griffiths from his own 22.

Caerphilly scored their sixth try from the restart.

Griffiths again breaking from his own 22, breaking weak tackles to cross under the posts to give emphatic victory in their final home game of the season ending.
