South Wales Scorpions’ 100th game at Blackwood RFC

Blackwood RFC will host South Wales Scorpions’ 100th game on Saturday June 21 when they take on York City Knights at 2.30pm.

The Kingstone Press Championship One game is part of a day of action with the Valley Cougars taking on Bristol Sonics, who they beat emphatically two weeks ago, in a curtain raiser at 12pm.

Tag matches between local clubs are also due to take place and a number of former players and coaching staff are  expected to join in with the celebrations.

Following Celtic Crusaders’ move from Bridgend to Wrexham in 2009, South Wales Scorpions were set up  by Crusaders fan and businessman Phil Davies, who subsequently ran the club for the first four years and based it in Neath.

Now with its primary base in Maesteg alongside the Wales Rugby League academy, the club are playing in their fifth season.

The club, which is now run by Wales Rugby League, will  become only the fifth professional side in Wales to reach 100 games and has a thriving feeder side in Valley Cougars.

Wales Rugby League chairman, Brian Juliff, said: “South Wales Scorpions reaching their 100th professional rugby league game is a special milestone for the further development of the sport in South Wales.

“The club has gone through many trials and tribulations, particularly during this pre-season with uncertainty over the ownership of the club.

“It was the volunteers, players and fan support, however, that convinced the Executive Board of Wales Rugby League to commit to ownership and management control of the club to ensure that a pathway remains in place for the abundance of young talent passing through our youth development programme.

“The ‘mission’ strap-line for Wales Rugby League is ‘To increase the awareness of Rugby League in Wales through a lifelong participation in the sport’ and the South Wales Scorpions are an integral part of our strategy.”

Tickets for the day can be bought by going to South Wales Scorpions’ ticket site.
