Rugby League: South Wales Scorpions lose to Hemel ahead of Super Sunday showdown

South Wales Scorpions conceded three tries in the first 15 minutes eventually losing 40-10 to Hemel Stags yesterday, July 20.

Hemel Stags bounced back from their narrow defeat at London Skolars last week and put in a dominating performance and the Scorpions failed to recover from the early scores.

They were preparing for a big day at Cardiff Arms Park next Sunday when they will face the only side they’ve beaten this season, London Skolars.

The first try came after just two minutes when Matthew Tebb found a gap to run through for BJ Swindells to convert.

Full back James Cameron set up James Hill on seven minutes for the second try, scored in the corner following a scrum that Scorpions players thought should have been given their way.

Matt Cook added the third in the left hand corner which Swindells did well to convert after missing the previous kick.

Jimmy Morgan went in at the corner on 28 minutes following successive Stags’ penalties and an excellent kick from Swindells added the extras.

At the end of the first half Jermaine Coleman set up brother Jy-Mel who ran through the back-line to score. Swindells’ kick made the score 28-0 at the break.

Scorpions started the second half well and scored two quick tries to put them back in the hunt.

Debutant Lloyd O’Connor stormed over with the first on 43 minutes which Paul Emmanuelli converted.

Nine minutes later following a great 40-20 by Emmanuelli, Kyle Scrivens crossed in the corner.

But two scores near to the end of the game inflated the win for the Stags.

Following repeat sets, James Hill scored in the corner and Swindells did well to convert from the touchline.

And the icing on the cake came from some great individual play for Morgan who ran 50 metres to create a try for himself.

Mathew Cook did well at the play-the-ball 10 metres out before Morgan went over and Swindells’ goal completed proceedings.

Scorpions will hope to bounce back for the Super Sunday of Rugby League  at Cardiff Arms Park on Sunday July 27.

The action begins at  11am with an East v West match between Gwendraeth Valley Raiders and Valley Cougars.

At 1pm, South Wales Scorpions and London Skolars under 19s play before the big Kingstone Press Championship 1 encounter between the two  senior sides at 3pm.

Advance tickets, priced from £1 for children and £8 for adults, can be booked by going to www.scorpionsrl.com.
