A Gwent police officer based in Ystrad Mynach had sex with a woman suspect in the custody suite at his police station, Cardiff Crown Court heard today, August 18.

Sergeant Richard Evans, 46, allegedly pulled down her underwear to have full sex while in charge of his station’s custody suite.

The married custody sergeant is also accused of giving her a lift home in a police van – before kissing her and touching her breasts while on duty.

The court heard uniformed Evans allegedly sexually assaulted two other women while being held in cells at his police station.

Prosecutor John Philpotts said: “While acting in the capacity of a custody sergeant, he engaged in sexual activity with three females who were in his care.

“He also gave one of these females a lift in a police vehicle and on that occassion he touched her sexually.

“If a police officer engages in sexual activity with a member of the public who is in his care then that constitutes misconduct.”

Evans is accused of sexual activity while on duty during an 11-year-period he was working for Gwent Police in South Wales.

Cardiff Crown Court heard that in 2003 he offered a woman a lift home in his police van before kissing her and touching her breast in the back of the vehicle.

The same woman was later arrested while drunk and taken to Ystrad Mynach police station.

The court was told she asked for a drink of water – and Evans is accused of taking her into a “sluice room” to have sex with her up against a sink.

Mr Philpotts added: “He approached her from behind, lowered her jeans and underwear and had sex with her.”

The court heard the woman told other officers that the sex was “consensual” after he offered to take her for a glass of water after a night out drinking.

Evans is also accused of touching another woman’s breasts and kissing her while she was being kept in custody at the police station.

Mr Philpotts said: “He assaulted her sexually by grabbing her by the hips and pushing his tongue in her mouth.”

Evans allegedly made inappropriate comments to a third woman about her piercings – asking what her tongue piercing would feel like against his “Prince Albert”.

He allegedly watched her getting change before pulling off a blanket she had wrapped around herself to stop him seeing her breasts.

The woman told the court: “It made me feel very uncomfortable, I didn’t expect that from an officer of the law.

“It made me feel uneasy and sleazy and not very good at all.”

Evans, of New Inn, Pontypool, Gwent, denies misconduct in a public office and three charges of sexual assault.

The trial continues.
