A number of books that remember those who lost their lives in World War One have been unveiled at Newbridge Memo.

The books were compiled by members of the British Legion in Newbridge, including Poppy Appeal organiser Ken Merriott, Nick Haynes and the late Les Jones..

The books took over two years of research to complete and list the names of all those who died in service during the war from Crumlin, Newbridge and Abercarn.

Islwyn MP Chris Evans joined members of the British legion in presenting the books to the Trustees of Newbridge Memo.

Mr Evans said: “I have been amazed and deeply moved by the stories I have heard about local people’s contribution to the First World War. The men and women remembered in these books form part of this remarkable history. They are not just names; they were people with families and friends, and were members of our community 100 years ago.

“I would like to pay tribute to Ken’s hard work and commitment to honouring the local people who lost their lives during the First World War.”

The books will be on display in the Memo’s Library.
