Rugby Union: Caerphilly RFC round-up

Sport | | Published: 12:22, Wednesday September 24th, 2014.

Caerphilly suffered another narrow defeat on September 20 as they went down 19-22 to Pontypool United at Virginia Park in Swalec Division Two East.

Twice the home side levelled the game only to lose by a penalty in the dying moments of the game.

Caerphilly turned around a 7-12 deficit in the second half, twice drawing level with the visitors.

A 36th minute try by scrum half Joe Bray was followed with a conversion from outside half Lloyd Rowlands in answer to two Pontypool tries and a conversion.

The second half produced a try by centre Will Worthington on 54 minutes to level the scores, only to see United extend their lead minutes later with a converted try.

Wing Chris Thomas drew the side’s level with a 61st minute try converted by Rowlands to set up a tense final quarter. The Gwent side got the better of the Cheesemen however, converting a penalty to take the fixture.

The standing leaves Caerphilly with two losing bonus points from their two league fixtures this campaign. The side take a break from league action with a Swalec Plate 1st round fixture against local rivals Senghenydd at Virginia Park at 2.30pm on September 27.

The second XV go from strength to strength, defeating Ynysowen at Virginia Park last weekend with 19-11 victory to make it two out of two this season.

The Youth team had a comfortable win against Caldicot. Leading by 25 points, the Youths added another 24 points in the 2nd half to complete the win. The side crossed the whitewash seven times through Sam Haley(2), Dan Howarth, Liam Waters, Lloyd Hughes, Connor Kawulok and Captain Rhys Hurley.

Outside half Roy Furnival converted four tries and added two penalties in his personal tally of 14 in the 49-0 victory. The side travel to Caerleon next weekend, kick off 2.30pm.
