Football: Nelson Cavaliers out of FAW Trophy after loss to Abercynon

Nelson Cavaliers are out of the FAW Trophy after losing 1-0 at home to Abercynon in the round two derby.

Abercynon, from the higher league structure, soon showed their footballing skills and took control of the midfield. This enabled their attack to cause problems for the Cavaliers defence and kept them on their toes.

Lance Evans scored from such an attack, orchestrated by Thomas Evans and James Davies, who threaded a through ball Evans to finish from the edge of the box, giving the home keeper Matthew Farr no chance.

Abercynon kept the ball well and continued to dominate and without some last ditch tackles from the Cavaliers defence and excellent saves from Farr the half time score line would have been much greater.

The second half started in a similar fashion, until Nelson made a change to midfield to try and gain a foothold.

They eventually started to get into the game and the half became a bit more of an even contest but time ran out and the Cavaliers failed to equalise.

This weekend they renew their rivalry as the teams meet again in the South Wales Intermediate Cup.

The Cavaliers’ 2nds were in action in the preliminary round of the Greyhound Trophy, losing 3-2 to Caerphilly.

Goals from Callum Yeo and Keenan Davies  were not quite enough in a battling performance against the higher league opposition.
