SAVED: Matthew Farr saves the vital penalty

Goalkeeper Matthew Farr was the hero for Nelson Cavaliers as they beat Abercynon 5-4 on penalties in round one of the South Wales Intermediate Cup on September 27.

The Cavs gained revenge after being knocked out of the FAW cup by Abercynon the week before, and scored an injury time equaliser to take the game to extra time at 2-2.

Abercynon were on top early on but it was the home team that opened the scoring.

Ben Banks picked the ball up and ran towards goal before placing the ball perfectly inside the post from 20 yards.

Abercynon came storming back and were level within two minutes, after hesitancy in the home defence allowed the Lance Evans to coolly slot the ball home from eight yards.

Abercynon went in front from a penalty that was calmly tucked away by Evans.

On 92 minutes Nelson gained a corner and sent everyone forward including the keeper.

It was keeper Farr who caused havoc, as he got a touch that was cleared off the line, In the mad goalmouth scramble, the ball went in off a defender to send the game into extra-time.

Extra-time was well contested but brought no goals, so the game went to penalties.

The first eight penalties were well taken with both keepers having no chance, but it was the ninth that proved crucial.

Farr in the Nelson goal guessed right and clawed the penalty away to give the Cavs the advantage.

Skipper Ben Banks calmly slotted away Nelsons fifth penalty to give them the win and send them through to face Hirwaun sports in the next round.
